Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:33 am, the temperature is 23.5 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the middle 40’s, falling to the middle to upper 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer with a high in the middle 50’s and a low around the freezing mark. Thanksgiving day will be mostly sunny with a slight chance for showers in the afternoon.
Little River is flowing at 136 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.78 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 186 cfs. The water temperature is 44.8 degrees and falling this morning.
Streams flows in the Smokies vary, from higher than normal to lower. They are all at much better levels since it rained night before last. Water temperatures are cold and plunging this morning. The water temperature at Oconaluftee River is currently 43.2 while the gauge site at Cataloochee Creek is reporting 39.7 degrees.
If you plan to go fishing in the mountains, you might want to wait until later, after the water temperatures bottom out and begin to rise. Fish the lowest elevation streams where the water is warmer. Nymphs will be good fly choices.
Fishing for smallmouth bass will be slow in the lowland rivers. Fishing for stocked trout will improve later today. Streamers, nymphs, egg patterns and Squirmy Worms are your best bets.
TVA and the Corps will be cutting back the generation this afternoon at several dams in the area. You may have some tailwater fishing options today, especially if you are boating. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing options you have.
According to recently released data from Southwick Associates, fishing license sales in America were down 6% from last year during the first six months of this year. Fishing license sales last year were off the charts due to the pandemic. Compared to 2019, fishing license sales were up 8% this year during the period.
Fishing licenses purchased by women were up 16% over 2019. “After years of steady declines, participation is higher for younger people”.
We have seen it on the lakes and rivers, trails and campgrounds. More people are fishing and participating in other outdoor activities.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
