Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 22.3 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the middle 50’s, falling to the low 30’s tonight. Thanksgiving Day will be mostly sunny and warmer with a high around 60 degrees. It will be breezy and there is a chance for rain in the afternoon. There is a high chance for rain tomorrow night and it will be windy. We have a chance for snow showers Friday morning becoming warmer later in the day.
Little River is flowing at 112 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.68 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 191 cfs. The water temperature is 40.8 degrees this morning.
Other streams in the mountains are either flowing lower than normal or at normal. Water temperatures are cold in the higher elevations, in the 30’s this morning and falling.
Fish later today after the water temperatures bottom out and begin to rise. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymph rigs will probably work best.
Due to the cool water temperatures, smallmouth bass will be mostly inactive in the lowland rivers. Trout, where they are stocked in these rivers may be active later. Nymphs, streamers, egg patterns and Squirmy Worms are good fly choices for the stocked trout.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams this morning. They plan to turn the turbines off at some dams later today. If you are hoping to fish on a tailwater today, check the TVA website before you go. They will not be generating at Watauga Dam but they will be sluicing.
We will be closed tomorrow for the Thanksgiving holiday and I will not be writing the fishing report. We will be open Friday and through the weekend.
I’m going to spend today photographing fly tying materials and tools and adding them to the online store. We have a lot of new materials in the fly tying department.
One of special interest to many of you is the CDL Euro Tailing Pack from Whiting Farms. These packs sell for $15 and they are loaded with feathers to tie tails on nymphs. At the urging of the guys at Whiting, I bought 4 packs to see what they look like and put them out to sell. They sold quickly, in a few days. Yesterday, I displayed 23 more.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us. Have a super Thanksgiving Day!
