Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 29.7 degrees.
Today will be partly cloudy with a high temperature in the middle 50’s, falling to the middle 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the middle 40’s. Tuesday and Wednesday will be sunny and warmer.
Little River is flowing at 114 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.69 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 233 cfs. The water temperature is 40.5 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing higher. Currently, flow at the Sevierville gauge is 261 cfs, 1.68 feet, compared to median flow of 245 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 204 cfs, which compares to median flow of 379 cfs. The water temperature is 39.6 degrees.
Tellico River is flowing at near normal at 128 cfs, compared to median flow of 139 cfs for this date.

As you can see from the sample above, many streams in the mountains are flowing low, clear and cold. November has been a dry month. We are not in a drought, or even abnormally dry. I checked the US Drought Monitor this morning. Last November was even drier at this point in the month at the Knoxville Airport.
Warmer air will move into the area beginning Tuesday and remain through early December, with no significant rainfall predicted during the period.
If you plan to fish today, fish in the low elevation streams where the water is warmer. Weighted nymph rigs will work best. Stealth is paramount to your success right now. Cold water loses the ability to hold dissolved solids, so it will be very clear. Avoid being seen by the trout and you will increase your chances of catching one.
Lowland rivers are flowing low and cold this morning. Smallmouth bass fishing will be slow. You can catch stocked trout in these rivers. Nymphs, egg patterns and Squirmy Worms are good fly choices.
Fishing on a tailwater may be your best option today if you can work with the generation schedules. Water temperatures will be warmer in some cases than in the free flowing rivers. There are planned breaks in the flows at several dams today, especially this afternoon. You may find wade fishing options and if you are boating you will find more. Visit the TVA website to see what your options are.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
