Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:22 am, the temperature is 24.8 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the middle 50’s, dropping to the middle 30’s tonight. Wednesday and Thursday will be much warmer, with highs in the 60’s and lows in the 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 105 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.65 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 240 cfs. The water temperature is 39.2 degrees at the low elevation USGS gauge near Townsend. Yesterday, the highest temperature recorded at the gauge was 41 degrees.
Streams in the Smokes are cold. The Cataloochee Creek gauge indicates the water temperature there is 35 degrees and falling. Most streams are flowing low too. We could use some rain. November has been a very dry month. Rainfall at the Knoxville Airport has amounted to only 1.12 inches this month. Normal is 4.04 inches. But last year at this point we had less, .86 inches.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing low and lower than normal for this date.
You best bet is to fish in the low elevations where the water not as cold. Nymph rigs will be your best option. The water is very clear. Stay hidden from the trout and you will have a better chance of catching one.
Most lowland rivers are flowing lower than normal. Smallmouth bass fishing will be slow. You might catch trout in these river where they are stocked. Nymphs, egg patterns and Squirmy Worms might work for you.
Tailwater fishing is a better option today. TVA is cutting back the flows at several dams this afternoon. There may be wade fishing opportunities at you favorite tailwater today. If you are boating, you have more. Check the TVA website to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
We do have warmer temperatures predicted beginning tomorrow. Fishing conditions will improve somewhat as the water in the free flowing streams will be warmer through the end of the week. The chance for rain is low this week.
