Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:38 am, the temperature is 30.2 degrees.
Warmer air is moving into the Tennessee River Valley today and through the end of the week. We will enjoy high temperatures in the 60’s each day with almost no chance for rain. At night, temperatures will fall into the 40’s through the period. Expect partly sunny skies today with a high in the low 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 100 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.63 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 247 cfs. The water temperature is 40.8 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauge sites are flowing lower than normal. Water temperatures are cold this morning, but we will see warming today and through the week, improving fishing for trout.
I would plan on fishing later in the day this week, when the water is warmer. Fish the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Do everything possible to avoid being seen by the trout. Nymph rigs will work best for you.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Smallmouth bass will be inactive today due to the cold water temperatures. You may be able to catch stocked trout in these rivers, and fishing for them will improve each day. Nymphs, egg patterns and Squirmy Worms are good fly choices.
There will be breaks in the generation schedules at several dams in the area this afternoon. You may find wade fishing opportunities at your favorite tailwater today. If you are boating, you have even more. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what they are.
This warming trend is good news for us. Fishing will improve this week and possibly beyond. The freestone streams are flowing low but we do have a good chance for rain Monday. The long term weather forecast indicates fairly warm days and nights ahead through December 15th.
I talked to Walter Babb yesterday. As he does every year, he has made a special bamboo rod and tied a ton of flies to be auctioned for his favorite charity, helping the needy families in his home town, Sweetwater, Tennessee. You can bid on the items he has made and donated over the phone, on the night of the auction. There is more information below and I will leave it on this page through the day of the auction.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.

The Needy Family Auction will be held December 11, 2021 at 5:30 pm at the Sweetwater, Tennessee Primary School. You can be there for the auction or bid by phone. The primary school is located at Highway 322 in Sweetwater.
Two boxes of hand tied Walter Babb flies will be auctioned separately. One box contains “Hatch Matchers” which are dry flies and wet flies. The second box contains backcountry dry flies. The total number of flies in the boxes combined is 78.
The hand made bamboo fly rod that will also be auctioned, was made by Walter and is a 7’ 3”, 3-piece for a 4 weight fly line. It is a single tip rod. The rod is flamed which produces a darker color. The reel seat is made from Vermont Firewood with down locking cap and ring. A metal rod tube and sock are included. To bid by the phone, contact Phil Roy at 423-337-1212 to set up the process.
