Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 38.3 degrees.
It will be sunny and warm today with a high temperature in the low 70’s falling to the upper 40’s tonight. Saturday will be mostly cloudy with a high in the middle to upper 60’s and a low in the middle 40’s. Sunday will be warm again, with rain moving into the area. We have a high chance for rain Sunday night and Monday.
The chance for rain is good next week. I read on one weather website, we may get up to 2 inches of rain over the next 7 days.
Little River is flowing at 98.1 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.62 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 209 cfs. The water temperature is 45.9 degrees this morning and steady.
Streams in the mountains are flowing low. Water temperatures are warming and that will continue through the week. Fishing will improve. The closer the temperature gets to 50 degrees, the better the fishing will be. Nymphs will probably work best but you may see hatches this week that could entice trout to feed on the surface. I would definitely have some blue wing olive dry flies and emergers in my fly box.
Plan on fishing later in the day when the water is warmer.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Smallmouth bass fishing may improve some over the next few days. Fishing for stocked trout in these rivers will definitely improve. Nymphs, egg patterns and Squirmy Worms are what I would use.
There will be breaks in the generation at several dams today, offering wade and boating opportunities to tailwater trout anglers this afternoon. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what options you have available.
The failure at Hebgen Dam in Montana has been resolved. The dam gate was repaired. Flows have been restored to the section of the Madison River below the dam. The river level fell early Tuesday morning, trapping trout and other species in side channels. They were trapped in shallow water. Volunteers moved trapped fish to the main channel yesterday. I heard there were more volunteers than were needed to protect the Madison River’s trout population in that section of the river.
We have much warmer temperatures to enjoy, and the possibility of much needed rain over the next few days. That is good news for us.
Wow, a large pack of coyotes just ran by our house. I walked outside to listen to the sound. They were running fast and excited. Now they have stopped near my office at home, and they are howling. My guess is, they were chasing and may have caught a deer.
We have a large concrete bird bath behind our house. Night before last, something drank all the water from the bath, which Paula cleans and fills every day. It must have been a bear or deer. We have seen one bear drink from the bird bath during the middle of the day.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
