Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:51 am, the temperature is 40.3 degrees.
There is a chance for light rain this morning. Cloudy skies will clear later today. The high temperature will be in the low 50’s, falling to the low 30’s tonight. Tomorrow will be cloudy early and clearing later, with a high in the upper 50’s with a low in the middle 40’s. Showers are likely Friday through Saturday. Highs will be in the upper 60’s both days.
Little River is flowing at 100 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.63 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 207 cfs. The water temperature is 44.8 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing lower than normal. Water temperatures are chilly but we will see some warming for the weekend. We will probably see higher water this weekend. The streams may be flowing higher than we prefer for fishing.
If you go today, fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Nymphs will likely work best.
Lowland rivers are flowing low again. Smallmouth bass fishing will be slow today. Fishing for stocked trout might be good and maybe better later this week. Nymphs, egg patterns or Squirmy Worms are good fly choices for the stocked trout.
There are some interesting generation schedules planned today at several dams. You may have an opportunity to fish on your favorite tailwater later today. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are and plan accordingly.
Firehole just introduced a new jig hook called the 520. These hooks are made using heavy wire and the shank is curved, which is a very unique design. In fact, a patent has been applied for. Will ordered a few of each size and they arrived Saturday. He received the order and displayed the hooks in the fly tying department. I shot photos of the box and a hook and loaded them up on our online store.
By yesterday morning, we were out of three sizes. We actually oversold two packs because our inventory updates every 24 hours. People bought something online that was not in stock and that is highly unusual. I don’t remember that happening during the past several months in the fly tying department. These hooks will be back in stock soon, and hopefully by the weekend. We will ship those two packs out to our online customers as soon as they arrive.
You can see the Firehole 520 on our online store by CLICKING HERE, but you can’t buy sizes #16 through #20. They are shown as “out of stock”.
I saw what happened early yesterday morning and changed the desired inventory level in the inventory system, by tripling what we will stock in those sizes. When Will came in, I told him what happened and he should place an order with Firehole immediately. He tried but could not place the order because Firehole’s dealer website was down. We kept checking, and finally the site was operating by about noon. He placed the order. It will hopefully ship to us today from Montana.
This may be a very popular hook. In a week or so, I may double again what we stock. Maybe people were looking for this new hook and found us online. Or, maybe not. We’ll see what happens.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
