Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 27.0 degrees.
It will be cloudy early, then sunny later today with a high temperature around 60 degrees, falling to the middle 40’s tonight. Rain is coming tomorrow and will last through Saturday. It will be warm both days, in the middle to upper 60’s and it will be windy. A cold front will move in Saturday night, as temperatures will fall into the upper 20’s. Sunday should be sunny and chilly, with a high in the low 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 96 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.61 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 232 cfs. The water temperature is 42.6 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing below normal. Water temperatures are cold and falling this morning. We will see water temperatures rise today and through Saturday. The rain will be warm Friday and Saturday, further raising the water temperatures. Fishing will improve each day unless we get too much rain Saturday.
If you go fishing today, you may want to wait until later, when the water temperatures are warmer. Nymphs will probably work best for you.
Many lowland rivers are flowing low. Smallmouth bass fishing will likely be slow today. Fishing for stocked trout will be best later today. Nymphs, egg patterns and Squirmy Worms are good fly choices.
There will be breaks in the generation at several dams this afternoon, giving tailwater anglers some opportunities. This should be a nice day to be fishing on one of these rivers. Take a look at the TVA website to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
I sent out over 20,000 emails yesterday advertising Gift Cards. This is gift card season at LRO. Customers are buying them at the shop. They are purchasing them online. And in some cases, customers call us and we send them gift cards. We are there to take your calls seven days a week.
Our gift cards can be redeemed in many ways and you can use them as often as you like until the card is depleted. You can use them in person at the shop or when ordering over the phone. They can be used for online purchases.
I actually buy them for myself, to use when I make fly tying material purchases at the shop. There are two in my billfold right now. One is full and the other is almost broke.
I made some lifestyle changing decisions this week. First, when I get home from work, I’ll hit the treadmill and walk one mile, uphill in 20 minutes. Then, and most importantly, I’m going to play guitar for one hour.
My favorite guitar is an old electric Gibson Les Paul I bought new in the 70’s. It still looks brand new with no “road wear”. It has never been “on the road” and neither have I. I put new strings on the guitar last night, sat down at a piano and tuned it up. I have two more sets of strings on the way here from Sweetwater. So, I’m set for the Winter and looking forward to it.
David Carson and I met with Chris from Simms last week and Chris inspired me. He lives near Nashville and plays guitar up to four hours per day. We talked about fly fishing gear because that is why he was there, and a lot about guitar playing and guitars.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.

The hand made bamboo fly rod that will also be auctioned, was made by Walter and is a 7’ 3”, 3-piece for a 4 weight fly line. It is a single tip rod. The rod is flamed which produces a darker color.
