Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 45.3 degrees.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a high temperature in the middle 60’s and a 50% chance for rain through the night. Tonight’s low will be in the middle to upper 50’s. Rain and thunderstorms are in the forecast for tomorrow with a high in the low 70’s. Sunday will be clear and cooler, in the low 50’s.
It will be windy tonight and tomorrow. The mountains are under a high wind warning tonight and tomorrow.
Little River is flowing at 91.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.59 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 232 cfs. The water temperature is 43.3 degrees and rising.
Streams in the Smokies are all flowing below normal and very low in some cases. That may change this weekend. Water temperatures are warming and will continue to do so through tomorrow.
You best fishing will be later today. Weighted nymph rigs are a good choice.
Most lowland rivers are flowing low. Fishing will be slow for smallmouth bass but may improve by tomorrow. Fishing for stocked trout will be fair to good, especially later today. Nymphs, egg patterns and Squirmy Worms are excellent fly choices for stocked trout in these rivers.
There will be periods of no generation at several dams today. You may have some tailwater fishing opportunities depending on which river you prefer. Check the TVA website to see what your options are.
Around 220,000 lake sturgeon have been stocked in East Tennessee rivers and lakes during the past 21 years after being absent from our waters for decades. Sturgeon can live to be 150 years old. Those stocked early in this project are almost reaching adulthood and sexual maturity. A 26 pound sturgeon was captured and tagged by TVA biologists yesterday in the Clinch River near Kingston. A sturgeon this size is still considered a juvenile.
I found a story and video about this project started long ago, on the WBIR website this morning. You can read and watch it by CLICKING HERE.
Fly tyers are getting very active again, which is usual during the Winter months. Our fly tying department has been very busy. It also appears more people have decided to take up this incredible hobby, which kind of extends our sport during the cold months as we prepare for Spring. Online orders for tools and materials are being shipped by us daily to customers in the United States.
Our best selling fly tying vise is the Renzetti C2003-R, a fantastic pedestal base model that sells for under $200. Customers bought two yesterday. We sold three in one day a couple of weeks ago. I normally stock 7 of that model, 2 of some models and only one of other more expensive vises. You can see our selection of Renzetti vises we stock by CLICKING HERE.
We have a shipment arriving from Renzetti today, with a re-stock of vises and other tools. Yesterday, I bumped up our desired inventory level of the C2003-R to nine and ordered four more that should get here Monday. This is not a good time of the year to run out of those.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
