Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:37 am, the temperature is 36.7 degrees.
Strong storms blew through east Tennessee yesterday, with high winds and fairly heavy rain. Rainfall amounts varied. Totals recorded were: Knoxville Airport .83 inches, Dry Valley Townsend 1.11 inches, Fox Hollow Townsend 1.58 inches, Cades Cove .80 inches, Cosby .54 inches and .65 inches fell in Gatlinburg.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the low 50’s, dropping to the low 30’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer with a high near 60 degrees.
Little River is flowing at 387 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.49 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 273 cfs. The water temperature is 49.3 degrees and falling.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 1,240 cfs, 3.02 feet at the Sevierville gauge, compared to median flow of 355 cfs. The river just peaked and is receding.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 677 cfs, 2.16 feet, compared to median flow of 486 cfs. The river is receding at the Birdtown gauge. The water temperature is 47.7 degrees and falling.
Tellico River is flowing at 395 cfs or 1.90 feet on the gauge at Tellico Plains. Median flow for this date is 209 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 79.3 cfs, 2.49 feet, compared to median flow of 88 cfs. The water temperature is 46.0 degrees.
Some streams are flowing very high while others are not. Little River is fishable but be careful wading. Water temperatures are falling and that will continue for a few hours. If you are going today, fish the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymph rigs are what I would use.
Some lowland rivers are flowing high, especially further downstream from the mountains where more tributaries enter the river. Fish the upper reaches outside the Park for stocked trout. Nymphs, egg patterns and Squirmy Worms should work best for you. I saw a photo of a huge trout caught by a youngster in Gatlinburg recently. Travis is doing a great job managing the trout fishery in Gatlinburg. Like Cherokee, they raise their trout in a hatchery and release often.
The turbines will be turned off at several dams in east Tennessee this afternoon, giving tailwater anglers several options. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
I took a bag of garbage out to the dumpster yesterday, then came back into the shop and grabbed a couple of garbage bags to take to my office. These were not the usual bags. They looked different an they were scented. I mean, “They were REALLY scented.
I got some strange looks when I stopped and talked to customers on my way back upstairs and I quickly explained, “I’m not wearing cheap perfume. It’s these garbage bags”. I told Will the same thing. I hope that scent wore off overnight.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
