Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 26.6 degrees.
It will be sunny and warm today with a high temperature in the low to middle 60’s and a low tonight in the middle 30’s. Tomorrow will be almost identical, but warmer at night, in the low 40’s. It will be warmer, day and night through Saturday, with rain likely Saturday.
Little River is flowing at 187 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.97 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 260 cfs. The water temperature is 42.8 degrees this morning.
Some streams in the Smokies are flowing at normal, while others are flowing below normal. Water temperatures are chilly this morning but we will see them warm over the next few days and fishing will improve.
Fish the low elevations today where the water is warmer. Nymphs will probably work best.
Some lowland rivers are flowing at about normal. Others are flowing lower. Water temperatures are cool so smallmouth bass fishing will be slow. Trout fishing in these rivers, where they are stocked, should be fair to good. Nymphs and egg patterns will work. Squirmy worms will too.
There are some tailwaters that will be fishable today with long breaks in the generation schedules. You should be able to wade or fish from a boat below some dams. Click on the TVA links below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
Next week is Christmas week. Visitors will be arriving in Townsend for the holidays. And, visitation will be strong through the new year. Will we have a white Christmas? I don’t think so. Unless the long term weather forecast changes, it will be too warm to snow.
Gift cards are the hot Christmas gift item right now at the shop. That will remain the case through next week. We mail the plastic gift cards to whoever you tell us to. Last minute shoppers buy our email gift cards up until the last day. We email the gift card in digital form directly to the gift recipient and it will work. We’ve been doing that for many years.
When the holidays are over, we will begin thinking about Spring fly fishing in the South. Some years that happens in late February. It all depends on the water temperatures. We need sustained water temperatures near or warmer than 50 degrees for the Spring hatches to begin. Anglers in the northern states, where Spring fishing starts later, will be watching what is happening here to plan last minute trips to the South. Those of us living in the South will be watching the water temperatures too. Before the internet, with remote sensors in the streams, we could only guess.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
