Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 29.3 degrees.
Warm air will move into the area today. It will be sunny with a high in the low 60’s and a low tonight in the low 40’s. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the middle to upper 60’s, falling to about 50 degrees tomorrow night. Friday will be warmer, with a slight chance for rain and a high around 70 degrees. The low temperature Friday night will be in the middle 50’s, with rain moving in. Rain is predicted Saturday with a high in the upper 60’s. It is going to feel like Spring.
Little River is flowing at 170 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.91 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 257 cfs. The water temperature is 42.8 degrees this morning.
Some streams in the mountains are flowing at normal while others are flowing lower than normal. Water temperatures are cold this morning, but they will begin to warm today and through the end of the week. Fishing will improve as we get closer to the weekend. If you go today, wait a while for the streams to warm. Fish the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Nymphs will probably work best.
I don’t think smallmouth bass will be active today. The water is too cold. Fishing for trout, where they are stocked in the lowland rivers, will be better when the water warms later today and over the next few days. Nymphs, egg patterns and Squirmy Worms are good fly choices.
There are breaks in the generation schedules at some dams, offering tailwater fishing options on some really good rivers, including the Clinch and South Holston, among others. Click on the TVA links below to see where to go and when.
Firehole Outdoors from Kalispell Montana released a new hook named the 520. This is a very unique barbless jig hook, used for tying competition style fly patterns. It is available in sizes #4 down to #20. This hook is made using heavy wire, with a curved short shank and a wide gape. It is so unique, Joe, the owner of Firehole, applied for a patent on the design.
We got the samples a few weeks ago. I checked the Firehole dealer website often to see if they were available for sale to us. They showed on the site two weeks ago, we needed to place an order anyway, so Will ordered a few of each size.
When the order arrived, I grabbed one box, photographed a hook and the box, and Will wrote content for our online store. Will had them up on our site for sale that Saturday afternoon. By Tuesday, we had sold out of three sizes. I upped the desired stock level in our inventory system and we ordered more. We got those last week and they are selling fast. Yesterday, I raised the desired inventory again and we ordered more. Most of the sales of this hook are going to customers who live in other states.
We did not expect this. It was a pleasant surprise. You can see the new Firehole 520 on our online store by CLICKING HERE. If some sizes are shown as out of stock, you can be assured more are coming our way quickly. We have one order that should arrive tomorrow, and another coming next week.
I sent Joe an email yesterday, advising him not to run out of those hooks. I bet he is surprised too and planning accordingly.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
