Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 33.8 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature near 70 degrees, with a low tonight in the low 50’s. It will be mostly cloudy tomorrow with a high around 70 degrees again, dropping to the middle 50’s tomorrow night. Saturday will be warm, with a high chance for rain all day and through the night.
Little River is flowing at 154 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.85 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 270 cfs. The water temperature is 42.4 degrees this morning.
Some streams in the mountains are flowing close to normal while others are flowing quite a bit lower. Water temperatures are cold this morning. I would go fishing later today after the water warms further, and fish the low elevations where the water is warm. Weighted nymph rigs will probably work best for you.
Some lowland rivers are flowing well, while others are flowing lower than normal. This won’t be a good smallmouth fishing day. Fishing for trout where they are stocked will be better. Again, go later today when the water warms. Nymph rigs, egg patterns and Squirmy Worms are good fly choices for the stocked trout in the lowland rivers.
You have some breaks in the generation at certain dams today, including Norris and South Holston. There may be others so check the TVA website and pick a tailwater to fish.
Will is working today and we will be receiving and ordering fly tying materials. Will is still in high school and still works about 13 hours per week at the shop with me. His office is next to mine. He is one of the hardest working young men I have known. It is obvious to me why he excels in everything he does, including fly fishing.
We have one order stuck in Oregon. They had terrible weather out there this week, as have other western states. Ice and snow in the mountains have caused shipping issues. The trucks can’t get over the passes.
One of our suppliers reported power outages. In today’s world, if you don’t have power, you are out of business until it is restored.
We are shipping a lot of orders to customers. We are also mailing plenty of gift cards. Customers are picking up gift cards at the store. Christmas day is a week from Saturday.
I have not seen many people in the shop who are actually going fishing or returning from fishing. Jimmy and Dennis went fishing in the mountains yesterday. They both live in Townsend and go fishing almost every week.
Customers are tying flies. That department is really doing well. We will be ordering new materials today. I put them in the inventory system yesterday. We try to bring in new fly tying merchandise often, to display in the shop and online. I am trying to figure out how to display more materials and tools and make that happen this Winter. We don’t have a display space issue on the online store. I suppose that is unlimited except for the time it takes to do it.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
