Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:39 am, the temperature is 50.4 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy and very warm with a high in the low 70’s dropping to the low 50’s tonight. We have a low chance for rain this morning. Tomorrow will be warm again and wet. Rain is in the forecast all day and through the night. Rainfall amounts between one half to one inch through Sunday morning is predicted. Sunday will be dry, partly sunny and cool with a high temperature in the middle to upper 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 149 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.83 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 278 cfs. The water temperature is 47.5 degrees this morning.
Water temperatures are rising and fishing is improving in the Smokies. Most streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal, but some are flowing near normal. Today will be a good fishing day. Fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Nymphs will probably work best but be on the lookout for aquatic insect activity. Blue wing olives love cloud cover. You may find midges and other aquatic insects active on the surface.
If you have been waiting for better fishing conditions in the freestone streams, today may be your day. Fishing could be good tomorrow, though there is a chance some streams may become temporarily stained. They will be rising tomorrow.
The lowland rivers are flowing near normal in some cases, and quite a bit below normal in others. Smallmouth bass may be somewhat active today and tomorrow. Trout, where they are stocked will be actively feeding, especially later today and tomorrow. Nymphs, egg patterns and Squirmy Worms are good fly choices. Streamers may work too.
There are short breaks in the generation at some dams and longer periods of low flow planned at a couple of dams in upper east Tennessee. Look at South Holston and Watauga on the TVA website and see what you think. If you are boating, you have more tailwater fishing options on other tailwaters today. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
I don’t see a chance for snow through the end of the year in the valleys. It will be warm Christmas Day, if the long term forecast holds true. I guess we could get some snow in the mountains before the end of the year.
For those of you who are looking for the new Firehole 520 jig hook, we have some sizes in stock. More are coming in all sizes early next week with another order arriving two days later. Our inventory system is set to stock 20 packs of some of the more popular sizes, and we will be ordering every week. This is the first curved shank jig hook I have seen. It is made using heavy wire in sizes down to #20. The 520 features a wide gape and a patent has been applied for.
We also now have the Tiemco 2457 #18 hook in stock. They have been impossible to get for several months. This is a very popular tailwater hook.
I have ordered from Renzetti several times during the past few days and I ordered four more vises yesterday. I am trying to keep 9 of the C2003 Traveler, our most popular vise, in stock. The model is touted to be the most popular fly tying vise in the world. I believe it. We stock one or two of other Renzetti models. You can see them by CLICKING HERE and right now, they are all in stock. Shipping is Free.
It is fly tying season. Will and I have been very busy.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
