Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:39 am, the temperature is 44.8 degrees.
It rained yesterday and last night. We got .70 inches in Townsend. We may get more rain this morning with a high temperature in the low 40’s today falling to the upper 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the low 50, falling to the low 30’s tomorrow night.
Little River is flowing at 222 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.08 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 243 cfs. The water temperature is 52.0 degrees and steady.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal this morning. Tellico River was flowing quite a bit higher than normal but it is receding quickly. Water temperatures are warm in the lower elevations.
Fishing in the mountain streams was very good yesterday. I talked to one customer who caught 6 trout while standing in the same spot. He showed me a photo of one really nice rainbow. I noticed the water temperature was 52 degrees at the Townsend gauge just before I talked to him.
Fishing may be good again today, especially in the lower elevations. Water temperatures will begin to fall at some point, so fishing may slow some when that happens. Right now, everything looks good. Nymphs will probably work best. I would go early today.
Most lowland rivers are flowing near normal and water temperatures are good this morning. Smallmouth bass should be active. Streamers and nymphs will work best. Trout, where they are stocked will be actively feeding. Nymphs, egg patterns and Squirmy Worms are good fly choices. You may find stained water in the lower reaches. If you do, move further upstream.
There are breaks in the generation schedules at several dams today. Tailwater anglers have choices, whether you prefer wading or boating. Browse through the TVA website from the links below to see what your tailwater fishing options are today.
It is official, this is Christmas Week. Many people love spending the holidays in the mountains so we will see visitors trickling in this week. I don’t see a chance for snow this week in the valleys. It will be a warm Christmas with highs near or in the lo 60’s this weekend, falling only into the 40’s at night.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
