Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 28.9 degrees.
It will be mostly sunny today with a high temperatures in the low 50’s, falling to the low 30’s tonight. Expect highs in the 50’s and lows in the upper 20’s to low 30’s through Thursday with no rain in the forecast. Friday and through the Christmas weekend will be warmer, in the 60’s during the day and in the 40’s at night with a low chance for rain Christmas Day.
Little River is flowing at 228 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.10 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 232 cfs. The water temperature is 46.6 degrees and falling.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing close to normal, with some flowing higher than normal. Little Pigeon River is rising at the Sevierville gauge. Most others are receding.
I would go fishing later today after the stream temperatures bottom out and will hopefully warm somewhat. Nymph rigs will probably work best.
Lowland river fishing for smallmouth bass will likely be slow due to the drop in the water temperatures. Fishing for trout, where they are stock, will be fair and maybe better than that. Nymphs, egg patterns and Squirmy Worms are good fly choices for the stocked trout in the lowland rivers.
There are not as many choices for wade fishing on the tailwaters, like we have had recently. There are breaks in the generation at Cherokee, South Holston and Watauga dams. They will be sluicing at Watauga Dam. If you are boating you will have more options.
Jack and I spent a couple of hours together at the shop yesterday. We discussed our second phase of remodeling the fly tying department to be done after the first of the year. We will be adding one large display and more pegboard on some walls.
The most expensive part of the project will be replacing all of the lighting in the larger room. It will require removing the old 8’ fluorescent fixtures and replacing them with 16 new tracks and up to 64 LED flood lights. We’ll use the same type of tracks and light heads we used in the expansion area when we remodeled and expanded over a year ago. That worked out really well. When you visit the fly tying department now, you certainly notice the difference.
