Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 54.9 degrees.
Rainfall totals yesterday were 1.21 inches at the Knoxville Airport and 2.06 inches in Townsend at one gauge and 1.68 inches at another gauge.
There is a chance for showers this morning. Today will be cloudy with a high temperature in the middle to upper 60’s, falling to the low 50’s tonight. Showers and thunderstorms are possible Friday with a high in the low 70’s and a low near 60 degrees. Rain is possible Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. Colder air will move in Sunday, dropping to around 20 degrees Sunday night.
We have the potential for widespread flooding by the weekend according to the National Weather Service.
Little River is flowing at 850 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.21 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 291 cfs. The water temperature is 54.7 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon river is flowing at 1,650 cfs or 3.39 feet at the Sevierville gauge. Median flow for this date is 502 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at about normal at the Birdtown guage but the river is still rising. Flow is 531 cfs, 1.95 feet, compared to median flow of 553 cfs.
Tellico River is rising and currently flowing at 1,150 cfs, 3.51 feet, compared to median flow of 284 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is rising quickly. The creek is flowing at 156 cfs, 2.82 feet, compared to median flow of 110 cfs.
Finding good fishable water in the mountains is not going to be easy today and it may be impossible. If you hope to go fishing, watch the stream gauges. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. Fishing would be good if the streams were flowing lower.
Most lowland rivers are probably flowing high and possibly stained.
There are long breaks in the generation schedules at several dams later today. There will be periods of no flow lasting for several hours at some dams. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your tailwater fishing options are.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
