Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 50.2 degrees.
Today will be warm with a high temperature near 70 degrees, falling to the middle 50’s tonight. We have a chance for showers and possible thunderstorms today and tonight. Showers are likely New Year’s Day and thunderstorms are possible. It will be windy. Showers, thunderstorms and possibly heavy rain are predicted tomorrow night and.
Sunday will be wet and cooler. Rain may change to snow showers overnight as temperatures will drop into the 20’s.
Little River is flowing at 458 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.63 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 299 cfs. The water temperature is 54 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing near normal, with some flowing higher and others lower. Little River is fairly swift, at least below the confluence of the three prongs where the USGS gauge site is located. You should be able to find water that can be safely waded right now, but that may change later today and through the weekend depending on how much rain we get.
Water temperatures are very good in the low to middle elevations. Fishing will be good barring heavy rain and rising water. Nymphs will probably work best today. You may see blue wing olives, small black stoneflies and other aquatic insect adults on the water, so be prepared with dry flies and emergers.
You will find some lowland rivers flowing higher than normal, while others are flowing lower. Smallmouth bass should be actively feeding. Stocked trout certainly will be active.
There are long breaks in the generation schedules at some dams with short breaks at others today. Fishing on the tailwaters will require careful planning, whether you are wade fishing or boating. You may need to travel to find the best tailwater fishing opportunities. Or, your favorite tailwater nearby may provide good flows. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your tailwater fishing options are today.
The shop will be open today from 9 am until 5 pm. We are closing one hour early today. We will be closed tomorrow (New Year’s Day), then re-open Sunday. I will not be writing the fishing report tomorrow, but will resume Sunday.
Have a great New Year’s weekend and thank you for being here with us.
