Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 29.8 degrees.
Some roads that were closed in the Park due to snow and ice have re-opened and include Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road), Cades Cove Loop Road and Laurel Creek Road. Evidently, Little River Road is still closed.
Today’s high temperature will be in the low 40’s, with rain expected before 5 pm. The rain may change to snow early tonight as temperatures dip to the low teens. Around an inch of snow is predicted tonight, with heavier snow in the mountains. It will be sunny and cold tomorrow, with a high temperature only reaching the low 30’s and a low in the teens. Saturday will be sunny and warmer, with a high in the upper 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 644 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.94 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 310 cfs. The water temperature is 45.9 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal and most are swift. This is not a good day to be fishing in the mountains. Though some roads have re-opened, they may close again. Rain is predicted to change to snow earlier this afternoon in the mountains. The Park Service often closes roads in anticipation of bad weather. That could happen at any time.
TVA plans to generate at most dams all day. I did not check every schedule, so visit the TVA website yourself to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers may be fair today. Try nymphs, egg patterns, squirmy worms or mop flies.
I read this morning that thousands of homes are still without power in Blount and Sevier Counties. We didn’t get that much snow this week, but what we got, clung to trees, which fell on power lines. The power was out at our home for 24 hours from Monday morning until Tuesday morning. Everyone I talked to this week that live in the area, were without power for at least one day.
We’ll see what happens tonight. If you do not see an updated fishing report tomorrow, you will know why.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
