Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 19.2 degrees.
It will be sunny and warmer today with a high temperature in the upper 40’s, dropping to the middle 30’s tonight. Rain is predicted tomorrow and through the night and it could be heavy at times. Expect a high temperature Sunday in the middle 50’s, falling to the middle 20’s overnight.
Some roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park have re-opened, including Little River Road, Laurel Creek Road and Cades Cove Loop Road. According to the Park’s Roads Twitter page, Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road) is currently closed due to snow and ice. That may change later today.
Little River is flowing at 468 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.65 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 314 cfs. The water temperature is 41.0 degrees and falling.
Some streams in the Smokies have receded to normal flows while others are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are cold but we will see some warming this weekend.
If you go fishing in the mountains, plan to fish the lower elevations where the water is warmer and wait a while before going. Nymph rigs will likely work best for you. Fishing will improve somewhat as the streams begin to warm. We have a chance for another high water event tomorrow.
Lowland river fishing for smallmouth bass will be slow today. You may find fishing for trout will be fair in these rivers, especially later today. Nymphs, egg patterns, squirmy worms and mop flies are good fly choices.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers are not planning for great tailwater fishing conditions today. They will be generating at most dams for long periods with some shorter breaks. There may be some angler friendly flows at some dams, so check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
I spent most of the day yesterday studying item sales trends in the fly tying department and adjusting the desired inventory levels upward, item by item. There are over 2,500 different items in the fly tying department. Our inventory control system creates automatic orders based on what our desired inventory levels are and what we have in stock. We order from our larger fly tying distributors on a weekly basis, trying to keep as much as possible in stock. When we are out of something, it is usually because our suppliers are out of stock.
This is fly tying season, especially now that we are finally living with winter weather conditions. Most anglers are fishing less right now. Those who tie flies are preparing for Spring.
If you have not visited our fly tying department in a while, you should. It has grown both physically in size and deeper in inventory over the past 4 years.
Almost everything sold in the fly tying department is also available online from us with free shipping. The online store is also a good resource for making lists in advance before visiting the shop in person.
Most of the customers I help in our store are shopping in the fly tying department because that is where I spend most of my time at work. Many of the most organized customers have shopping lists either hand written on paper or on their phone. I love hearing what customers are tying and what species they are fishing for.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
