Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:35 am, the temperature is 22.6 degrees.
Today will be sunny and warmer with a high in the low 50’s and a low tonight in the low 30’s. Tomorrow will be partly sunny with a high in the low 50’s, a low around 30 degrees and a chance for rain in the afternoon. Friday will be partly sunny with a high in the middle 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 753 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.09 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 314 cfs. The water temperature is 41.2 degrees this morning.
Streams on the west side of the mountains are still flowing quite a bit higher than normal. Streams on the east side are flowing closer to normal. If you go fishing today, be careful wading. The water is swift. Water temperatures are chilly. Fishing in the Smokies will not be good today but you could catch trout. If you go, try weighted nymph rigs.
The lowland rivers exiting the mountains are flowing high and cold. Fishing for smallmouth bass will be slow. Stocked trout fishing will likely be slow too, but if you wait a while, and give the rivers a chance to warm some, you may do OK. Sub-surface flies will work best for you.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating most of the day with only short breaks at some dams. There are exceptions, especially in upper east Tennessee and maybe elsewhere. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
These are not ideal fishing conditions in the freestone streams and I bet most of us are looking forward to Spring. I know for sure, I am. According to the long term weather forecast, cold temperatures will remain through January in east Tennessee. We expect that.
Spring fishing has begun as early as late February some years but it usually occurs in March. When water temperatures rise to around 50 degrees, trout and aquatic insects become active. Quill Gordons, Blue Quills and other aquatic insects will be hatching. Trout will be feeding on the insects. Anglers will be enjoying good fishing again.
It’s not that far off.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
