Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:39 am, the temperature is 30.2 degrees.
Today will be cloudy with a high temperature in the middle 40’s falling to the middle 30’s tonight. We have a chance for showers mainly this afternoon. Rain and possibly snow are predicted tonight.
Rain and snow early tomorrow is predicted to change to rain later in the morning tomorrow, with a high temperature around 40 degrees. There is a chance for rain and snow tomorrow night with a low temperature in the 20’s. One weather website I check daily predicts snow accumulations of one to three inches tomorrow night. There is a low chance for snow Monday, with a high temperature in the low to middle 30’s.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the mountains with possible significant snow accumulations Sunday and Sunday night. There have been no road closings so far in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. CLICK HERE to visit the Park’s Road Twitter page, as some roads may close by tonight or tomorrow in anticipation of winter storm conditions in the mountains. Snow accumulation of four to eight inches or more is possible in the mountains through the weekend.
Little River is flowing at 373 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.46 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 286 cfs. The water temperature is 42.4 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies have receded to near normal, with some still flowing higher. Water temperatures are cold and trout feeding activity is low. If you decide to go fishing in the mountains today, fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymph rigs will work best for you.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers is slow. You may catch stocked trout but don’t expect good fishing. I don’t think it will be. Nymphs, squirmy worms, egg patterns or mop flies are good fly choices if you decide to go.
TVA will be running their generators all day at the dams I checked this morning. I did not look at the generation schedules at all dams, so refer to the TVA website from the links below and you may find a tailwater to fish today.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
