Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature is 37.4 degrees.
Today will be cold and rainy with a high temperature in the upper 30’s, falling to the low 20’s tonight. Rain will change to snow tonight as temperatures fall. Snow accumulations of one to three inches are predicted tonight. Expect rain and snow tomorrow, with a high in the middle 30’s and a low tomorrow night around 20 degrees.
The mountains are under a winter storm warning today and through tomorrow. Snow, sleet and high winds are expected in the high elevations. New snow and sleet accumulations between six to ten inches are predicted today and tomorrow.
Some roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park have closed in anticipation of the winter storm. The closed roads include, Little River Road from Sugarlands to Townsend, Laurel Creek Road and Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road.
Little River is flowing at 319 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.34 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 262 cfs. The water temperature is 43.3 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies have receded to near normal. Water temperatures are cold and they will become colder over the next two days or longer. Fishing for trout will be slow and access to streams is limited. This is not a good day to be fishing in the mountains.
Lowland river fishing will be slow today but you might catch trout where they are stocked. Weighted sub-surface flies will work best for you if anything works at all.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers plan to generate at most dams all day giving tailwater anglers limited choices. Check the TVA website to see if you can find a fishable tailwater.
This will be a great fly tying day and not a great fishing day. Will and I received several fly tying orders yesterday and today, I will be ordering more. I have been ordering once a week from our largest supplier. Now, I will be ordering every three or four days. Thankfully, we have a very good “state of the art” inventory management system.
I ordered a six month supply of thread and spool packaging header cards from the printing company in Nashville I founded in 1973. I placed the order with Bill last week, who told me “You and Jerry practically raised me”. Bill and I have been friends for a long time, over 40 years. Jerry and I stay in touch. He is like a brother to me. He sold the company and retired a year or so ago.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
