Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:37 am, the temperature is 29.8 degrees.
I looked outside this morning, expecting to see snow on the ground, but there was none. There is no snow clinging to the trees. We do have a dusting of snow on the wood decks at our house. It is much warmer this morning than was predicted 24 hours ago.
Road conditions are worse in the mountains. I saw one report this morning, indicating snowfall of over 10 inches at Newfound Gap that occurred earlier yesterday. There could be more now. Many roads in the Park are closed, including Newfound Gap Road, Little River Road, Laurel Creek Road, Cades Cove Loop Road, Gatlinburg Bypass and Cherokee Orchard Road.
It will be cold and breezy today, with a high temperature in the low to middle 30’s. We have a chance for snow showers today and early this evening. We may get up to one inch of snow. A colder night may be in store for us, with a low temperature predicted to be in the low 20’s. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high temperature in the upper 40’s, falling to the upper 20’s tomorrow night.
Little River is flowing at 382 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.48 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 254 cfs. The water temperature is 41.2 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing near normal or higher than normal. Water temperatures are cold. I doubt if we will see the streams warm today or tonight. Fishing will be slow in the free flowing streams and access in the Park is very limited.
Lowland river fishing will be slow for smallmouth bass. I think fishing for stocked trout will be slow as well.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at most dams.
This is not a good fishing day. It will be cold and windy with wind chill factors much lower than we are used to. If you go fishing today, be sure to have a change of dry clothes in your fishing vehicle. This is not a good day to fall in!
Today is my day off but I will go to the shop early to do a few things. I brought a 5-gallon bucket of ice melt up from the basement last night, found my snow boots and was prepared to melt snow and ice from the concrete ramp leading down to Old Cades Cove Road. I don’t think I’ll need that this morning. I am going to wait until daybreak to drive to the shop so I can see the roads well.
A lot of people are off from work today celebrating MLK day. We should be busy at the shop.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
