Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 29.3 degrees.
It will be mostly sunny today with a high temperature in the low 40’s falling to the low 30’s tonight. It will be much warmer Wednesday. The high temperature is predicted to be in the low 50’s. Rain will move into the area Wednesday night. It will be colder, later this week. There is a low chance for snow Thursday and Friday.
Heavy snow fell in Great Smoky Mountains National Park this week. LeConte Lodge reported 17 inches of snow on the ground yesterday morning. Most roads in the Park are still closed due to snow and ice, including Newfound Gap Road, Little River Road, Laurel Creek Road and Cades Cove Loop Road.
Little River is flowing at 311 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.32 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 274 cfs. The water temperature is 39.2 degrees this morning.
Some streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal, while others are flowing below or higher than normal. Water temperatures are cold. Trout are sluggish. This will not be a good day to fish in the mountains, due to cold water temperatures and closed roads.
Fishing in the lowland rivers will be slow today for trout and smallmouth bass.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at most dams, though there is a break in the generation at Watauga Dam this afternoon and there may be others. Check the TVA website to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
Fly tying thread is in short supply from some manufacturers which is an essential component used by fly tyers. Some colors from one supplier in size 70 denier have been out of stock for about one year. Those bright colors are the least popular but still important to fly tyers. Beads and hooks have been in stock well during the past year, with only a few exceptions. I will be adding Veevus 6/0 thread to our orders beginning today. We started stocking Veevus 8/0 a few weeks ago. We have not had any issues getting Uni-Thread or Veevus thread.
Squirrel skins are in short supply too. They are provided to fly tying distributors by hunters and trappers. Squirrel dubbing has become very popular. The hair is shaved from the squirrel skins to be dyed or offered natural.
What I have heard is, the squirrel dubbing popularity is driven by anglers tying Euro nymphs. We have been buying squirrel dubbing from two suppliers and for now, we are fairly well stocked. I saw an order shipped to us yesterday with more squirrel dubbing listed on the invoice attached to the email, so we will be getting more this week.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
