Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 42.0 degrees.
It has been raining since midnight and it is still raining, with a total of .31 inches so far. The rain will continue until early afternoon, and may change to sleet or snow before ending later. Little to no snow and sleet accumulation is expected in the valley. Today’s high temperature will be what it is now, dropping to the low 20’s tonight. Friday will be cloudy with a high temperature in the low 30’s falling to the teens overnight. It will be sunny Saturday with a high in the low 40’s.
Several roads that were closed in the Park have re-opened. Newfound Gap road is still closed due to snow and ice. CLICK HERE for updates on the Park’s Roads Twitter page. The weather radar is not indicating snow in the mountains at this point but that will change later today.
Little River is flowing at 303 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.30 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 303 cfs. That is not a typo. Little River is flowing at exactly median flow right now. Little River is rising slowly. The water temperature is 44.1 degrees this morning.
Other streams in the mountains are flowing near normal, with some flowing lower and others flowing higher. The rainfall overnight and this morning has not affected water levels much, but we may see water levels rise later this morning and during the day. Water temperatures will fall today.
Fishing will not be good in the Smokies but catching trout may be possible. Weighted nymph rigs are a good choice if you decide to go fishing today.
Fishing is probably not good in the lowland rivers, but you might catch stocked trout on nymphs or other sub-surface flies.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at several dams. There are possible tailwater wade fishing options in upper East Tennessee. Check South Holston and Watauga dams and others on the TVA website to see if you can work with their generation schedules.
The temperature is falling and rainfall totals have increased since I checked earlier.
Yesterday was better. We had a high temperature of almost 60 degrees. It was a beautiful day. I took advantage of the nice weather and came home earlier than normal to cut up a huge tree that had fallen over one of our driveways. Paula and I got the job done using our largest chain saw and a peavy. The saw is powerful, heavy and has a 20-inch bar. I wrestled that saw for over an hour, then when we finished, I walked on the treadmill.
I am always anxious to get up early and start the work day. Not this morning.
Have a great one and thank you for being here with us.
