Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 25.9 degrees.
It will be cloudy and cold today with a high temperature around the freezing mark, falling to the middle to upper teens tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer with a high in the low 40’s and a low in the upper teens. Sunday will be sunny, with a high in the low to middle 40’s and a low in the middle 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 311 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.32 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 293 cfs. The water temperature is 39.9 degrees and falling.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal, some lower and others higher. The streams are cold and we will not see much if any warming today. Trout will be sluggish. If you go, plan on using weighted nymph rigs and hope for the best.
Laurel Creek Road is closed due to icing. Cades Cove Loop Road is open, but you can’t get there until Laurel Creek Road re-opens. Little River Road is open. Newfound Gap Road is closed.
Lowland river fishing will be slow due to the cold water temperatures.
TVA will be generating all day at the dams nearby. I did see a break in the generation schedules at South Holston and Watauga dams. Tailwater anglers have limited options today, but you can find them by visiting the TVA website from the links below.
I would rather write fishing reports when fishing is good. Maybe that will not be too far off. Not many people are fly fishing right now and we are very slow at the shop.
Will and I spent the day yesterday, receiving and displaying a large Wapsi order in the fly tying department. It was the largest Wapsi order we have seen in a while. We were both packaging thread and other spooled materials.
Will is re-arranging the thread section in the department. We added more colors of UTC Ultra Thread 140 denier to the selection yesterday. We are also expanding the selection of Veevus threads, with all colors of 6/0 coming our way in a couple of days. We added Veevus 8/0 about two weeks ago. We will also put these new threads and colors on the online store.
We have fly tying tool and material orders coming from almost all of our suppliers and two from Wapsi and Renzetti.
Fly tying material availability from our suppliers is improving and we are happy about that.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
