Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 22.3 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature around 50 degrees, dropping to 30 degrees tonight. Rain and snow are likely tomorrow with a high in the low 40’s. Snow will continue falling tomorrow night and it will be cold, in the low teens. Sunshine will prevail Saturday but it will be cold, with a high around 30 degrees. Sunday will be sunny and warmer.
Most roads in Great Smoky Mountains are open according the their Roads Twitter page. Evidently, Little River Road is still closed due to snow and ice.
Little River is flowing at 205 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.03 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 325 cfs. The water temperature is 37.2 degrees.
Streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal and the water is cold. We will see some warming today, but the water temperatures will plunge by the weekend. Fishing will be slow this weekend.
Fishing will be slow in the lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains, through towns and the valleys. It may be possible to catch the trout but I would not hold out much hope.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams in middle and east Tennessee with some exceptions. Long breaks in the generation schedules are planned at South Holston and Watauga dams today. TVA or one of their contractors is working on the weir dam on the South Holston so the water has been turned off during working hours. There may be more tailwater fishing options so visit the TVA website from the links below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
Business has been very slow at the shop this week. Traffic is light in Townsend. Since we have been in the fly fishing business for 26 years, I have grown to dislike Winter. Thankfully we live in a part of the country where Winters are short.
This is fly tying season so Will and I have been busy. We have a Wapsi order arriving today and another Wapsi order coming tomorrow. Other orders will arrive this week. I placed another order with Wapsi yesterday. We are ordering from them about every four days.
We are getting another dose of Winter weather tomorrow and Saturday. Bundle up.
Paula just got a text and a photo this morning from a local friend of ours. The Townsend Shopping Center burned down last night. This is awful news. I feel terrible for Jerry and Jean Sullivan and Tammy Proffitt, friends I see and talk to almost every week. This is a loss for all of us who live in or around Townsend. The Townsend Shopping Center is probably the oldest businesses in town. I dread driving by today.
Have a good day and thank you for being here with us.
