Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:37 am, the temperature is 19.8 degrees.
Many roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are closed due to snow and ice. The closed roads include Little River Road, Cherokee Orchard Road, Laurel Creek Road, Cades Cove Loop Road and Newfound Gap Road.
Today will be sunny and warmer with a high temperature near 50 degrees and a low tonight in the middle 20’s. It will be sunny tomorrow with temperatures close to what we will have today.
Little River is flowing at 181 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.95 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 299 cfs. The water temperature is 32.9 degrees this morning.
Fishing for trout in the mountains will be slow today due to the frigid water temperatures, though we will see some warming later. Access to many streams is limited by closed roads. Hopefully some roads will re-open today. You can check for updates by CLICKING HERE.
Fishing in the lowland rivers will be slow today thanks to the cold water temperatures.
I noticed a few long breaks in the generation schedules at some dams. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what your tailwater fishing options are today.
The back roads around Townsend were slick yesterday morning. We had about 1-inch of snow covering a layer of ice. I drove to the shop in 4-wheel drive at 10 miles per hour and my truck slid a short distance one time. When the sun popped out, the frozen stuff quickly melted. Watch for slick spots on the back roads this morning. The main roads were clear and dry when I drove home.
There was a lot of activity at the shop yesterday. Customers and friends were out and about. I helped a bunch of people in the fly tying department, which is where I usually work. The guys were busy downstairs too.
Anglers are preparing for Spring. Spring fishing comes early in our part of the country. Hopefully it will be sooner than later.
We will be open from 9 am until 5 pm today and it is going to be a nice one for a drive to Townsend.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
