Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:34 am, the temperature is 32.9 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the upper 50’s dropping to the low 30’s tonight. It will be breezy today. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer, with a high in the low 60’s falling to the low 40’s at night.
A front is moving in Saturday. With it comes a low chance for rain during the day with a high in the low 50’s. Temperatures will fall into the upper 20’s Saturday night and the light rain may change to snow. Sunday will be cold with a high in the upper 30’s and a chance for light rain or light snow.
Little River is flowing at 373 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.35 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 300 cfs. The water temperature is 41.7 degrees this morning.
We have not seen much warming of the streams so far this week. Surely they will warm further today and tomorrow. The rivers in the Smokies are receding. Most are flowing just slightly above normal.
Today and tomorrow will be pretty fishing days, but it will be breezy both days. If you go fishing in the mountains, use weighted nymph rigs.
Smallmouth bass fishing will be slow in the lowland rivers. If you are planning to fish the stocked waters, you should see some improvement today and tomorrow if the water warms a few more degrees. Try nymphs, egg patterns, squirmy worms or mop flies.
TVA and the Corps will be generating with only short pauses at most dams today. There are longer breaks planned at some dams, including Wilbur and South Holston. They will be spilling 240 cfs at Wilbur Dam. There may be more tailwater fishing options. Check the schedules on the TVA website from the links below. Hopefully you can find a tailwater with suitable flows.
Business is picking up at the shop as we move closer to Spring. Anglers are anxious and getting ready.
I check the long term weather forecast every morning like most folks who are anticipating the coming of fly fishing Spring in the Smokes. At this point, it looks like the second half of February will be warmer, with highs in the 50’s and 60’s. Lows at night may be in the 30’s and 40’s. Of course, the forecast could change.
Maybe it will change for the better!
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
