Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:37 am, the temperature is 38.1 degrees.
It will be sunny and warm today with a high temperature in the low 70’s and a low tonight in the low 40’s. It will be very warm tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday. High temperatures are predicted to be in the 70’s, reaching the high 70’s on Sunday. Lows at night will be in the upper 40’s Friday night and the middle 50’s Saturday night. There is no rain predicted through Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 598 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.76 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 339 cfs. The water temperature is 47.7 degrees this morning. Yesterday, the water temperature rose to near 50 degrees.
Streams in the Smokies are receding very slowly. The flows are higher than many anglers prefer. There are areas in streams that are swift. If you go today, pick safe spots to stand and fish.
Water temperatures in the mountains are rising to a point where trout will become active. Fifty degrees is the number we are waiting for. I don’t think there is any doubt that will happen in the low elevations over the next few days. With the water levels falling, and the water temperatures warming, with no rain expected, fishing will be much improved this weekend.
Plan to fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer.
Lowland river fishing for stocked trout will get better over time this week.
It takes time for trout to adjust to favorable conditions and begin actively feeding. We can look at the water temperatures, knowing that they are in the trout’s preferred range but, the trout activity does not turn on like a light switch. Their feeding activity increases gradually. I think that is probably because the streams will be cooler at night during this transition. Fishing is best when the water temperatures are sustained in the preferred range day and night.
I helped Paul and his son yesterday. They are here from Michigan. They are very experienced anglers. I really hoped fishing would be good for them. They fished on the Middle Prong of Little River. I got an email from Paul last night and I just read it. Fishing was slow. I am wishing them success today and tomorrow.
Unfortunately, TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating at most dams today. There are short breaks planned at some dams, with no pauses at others. Visit the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing options you have today. If you are boating, you have more choices.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
