Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:31 am, the temperature is 30.9 degrees.
Today will be sunny, breezy and warm, with a high temperature in the upper 60’s. It is going to feel like Spring. Tonight will be warmer than it has been in a while, with a low around 40 degrees.
Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy and cooler with a high in the low to middle 50’s. Winter will return tomorrow night, with a low in the middle 20’s and a chance for light snow. No accumulation is expected in the low elevations.
Super Bowl Sunday will be chilly, with a high in the low 40’s falling to the teens overnight.
Little River is flowing at 336 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.27 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 290 cfs. The water temperature is 42.1 degrees. Yesterday, the water warmed to almost 44 degrees at the Townsend gauge.
Streams in the Smokies have receded to about normal for this date. I hoped water temperatures would be warmer but this Winter warm front is still lingering, at least through today and tonight. We will see water temperatures rise more today.
Fishing may not be great or even good, but it has improved some. Today and tomorrow offer much better conditions than we have had in a while. If you go, weighted nymph rigs will probably work best.
Lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains will warm somewhat today. You might have a shot at catching stocked trout in these rivers today and tomorrow. Try nymphs, squirmy worms, egg patterns or mop flies. Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency will begin their Spring stocking activity late this month.
As we expect, TVA and the Corps will be generating for long periods at some dams with only short pauses. There are longer breaks planned at other dams this afternoon. Check the TVA website to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater today. You might be able to squeeze in some fishing time on a few tailwaters.
I placed a big fly tying material and tool order with one of larger suppliers on February 1st. As of yesterday, it had not shipped which is highly unusual. I like to order from them about every five days or so. But, I can’t re-order until they email an invoice to me so I know what is coming. They send the invoice when the order ships.
What happened is, after I placed the order, an ice and snow storm shut them down for three days. They are located in Arkansas. Hopefully it will ship today and I can place another order early today or this weekend.
Beginning this Spring, parts of the Foothills Parkway between Walland and Highway 129 will be closed in phases for repaving and other repairs. The project will last through the middle of next year. You can read more on the WATE website by CLICKING HERE.
Motorcycle riders, fishermen, boaters and sightseers are not going to be happy about this. I’m not looking forward to it either.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
