Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 52.0 degrees.
The temperature outside is not a typo. It is really that warm. I checked other personal weather stations too.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a high temperature of about 55 degrees and a slight chance for rain. Tonight will be cold. The low temperature is predicted to be in the middle 20’s with a slight chance for snow. Super Bowl Sunday will be chilly, with a high in the low 40’s falling to the low 20’s overnight.
Little River is flowing at 303 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.19 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 281 cfs. The water temperature is 43.9 degrees.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing right at normal this morning. Water temperatures did not rise to where we hoped they would be, but they have warmed some this week. They water temperatures probably won’t rise much today due to the lack of sun and it will be cooler.
I would go fishing anyway. You may not catch many trout and you may not catch any. But, you will be outdoors and we could all use that right now. Use weighted nymph rigs.
Lowland rivers, flowing out of the mountains, are at good levels and fairly warm. Don’t expect smallmouth bass to be active. However, stocked trout might be caught. Try nymphs, squirmy worms, egg patterns and mop flies.
There are very few breaks in the generation scheduled today at area dams. You might want to click on the links below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater. Maybe you can make something happen.
I clicked on the link to the schedule at Tims Ford Dam. They are sluicing 240 cfs with no generation planned. I see that every time I visit that page which I don’t do every day. I would think you could work with that flow but I am not sure. I used to fish the Elk River tailwater fairly often when I lived in Middle Tennessee and I really enjoyed the river.
Dwayne and I floated the Elk once on an overnight camping trip. We camped on an island. The island had enough elevation, and there was no debris that would indicate it would be under water when TVA generated at the dam. We did pull the canoe up to the campsite and tied if off just in case. We woke the next morning, ate breakfast and continued our journey without incident and caught trout along the way.
I saw this article yesterday when I was searching for news to share with you. It appears on the Fly Fisherman Magazine website and it is titled, “Modern Midges: 12 Fly Recipes”. If you tie or fish with midges, you may want to check the article out by CLICKING HERE.
I must have been living under a rock. Where have I been?
It was yesterday that I first heard of singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran. He is incredible. Paula and I “bluetoothed” some of his music videos through a stereo last evening and we were both blown away. We will be buying and downloading his music. The young man has talent. You probably know that.
This reminds me of the first time I heard Elton John 50 years ago.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
