Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:32 am, the temperature is 20.1 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the middle to upper 40’s and a low tonight in the middle 20’s. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer. The high temperature will be around 60 degrees, dropping to the low 30’s tomorrow night.
Much warmer air will move into the Tennessee River Valley Wednesday. It will be even warmer Thursday, with rain likely. Rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible.
Little River is flowing at 253 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.06 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 305 cfs. The water temperature is 40.1 degrees and falling quickly.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal. Water temperatures are cold this morning and plunging. Fishing for trout in the Smokies will be slow today due to the cold water conditions. If you go, try weighted nymph rigs.
Fishing will be slow in the lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at several dams with only short pauses. There are longer breaks in the generation scheduled at some dams. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing options you have today.
It is time to start watching the long term weather forecast. This time of the year, I check it every day. A warming trend, beginning next week, may signal the coming of fly fishing Spring in the Smokies.
Beginning Monday February 21st, it should be warm through the end of the month, according to the forecast. We may see highs in the 60’s to low 70’s, with lows at night in the 40’s and 50’s. If that actually happens, the streams will warm.
When the streams warm to near 50 degrees or warmer, trout will become active. If those temperatures are sustained day and night, aquatic insects will become active too. We will see hatches of blue quills, quill gordons, blue wing olives and other insects.
That is what we are waiting for. In some years, this happens in late February. Maybe this will be one of those years.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
