Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 21.4 degrees.
It will be sunny and warmer today with a high temperature around 60 degrees, with a low tonight in the upper 30’s. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the low 60’s and a low in the upper 40’s. Expect rain Thursday, through the day and night.
Little River is flowing at 239 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.02 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 314 cfs. The water temperature is 38.8 degrees this morning and falling.
All streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauge sites are flowing below median flow. The streams are cold, in the 30’s. We will see some warming over the next three days. Temperatures at night will be cold again Friday and Saturday, then begin warming again Sunday and through next week.
Fishing for trout in the mountains will be slow today. If you go fishing today, use weighted nymph rigs. Don’t expect good fishing.
The same is true in the lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains and through the valleys. The water will be cold. Trout and smallmouth bass will be lethargic.
I didn’t see many tailwater wade fishing options when I checked the generations schedules. There are some pauses in the generation planned. Tailwater trout fishing is a good choice today if you can work with the generation schedules. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to see what your tailwater fishing options are.
The long term weather forecast looks good next week. Right now, it appears it will be very warm, day and night for a few days. Then, we will see colder temperatures at night late in the week and through March 1st. Fishing will improve next week, at least for a few days, if the long term forecast holds true.
Winter is not over but we will get a nice break for a few days this week and maybe again next week.
If you are hoping for an early Spring fishing trip to the Smokies, you should make your decision closer to the time you can come. Watch the water temperatures and the short-term weather forecast.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
