Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:36 am, the temperature is 60.8 degrees.
The wind is howling this morning. We are under a high wind advisory today and tonight. It will be warm today, with a high temperature in the low 70’s. We have a chance for rain showers this afternoon. A cold front is moving in tonight, along with rain and a chance for thunderstorms. The low temperature is predicted to be in the low 30’s.
There is a chance for rain and snow showers tomorrow morning before becoming mostly sunny. The high temperature tomorrow will be in the upper 30’s. The weekend will be sunny and warmer, especially on Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 215 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.95 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 368 cfs. The water temperature is 45.9 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing below normal. That should change soon, most likely tonight. It look like we will be getting more rain next week.
Fishing in the mountains and lowland rivers will be risky today due to high winds and the chance for falling limbs and trees. Water temperatures will rise today then fall again tonight and tomorrow.
TVA and the Corps will be generating today at most dams with only short breaks that will be hard to work with if you are wade fishing. I did notice a favorable schedule at South Holston Dam. There may be others. Check the TVA website to see what your options are. Wind will be an issue today.
I found a video that reminded me of many nymphs I tie and use. The fly is called a Squirrel Nymph. The nymph uses bead chain eyes for weight and the appearance of eyes. I use bead chain on many flies, including saltwater and warmwater flies.
Another component is squirrel dubbing. Squirrel dubbing is spiky and realistic looking. We sell quite a bit of this dubbing at the shop in many colors. It is very popular for tying nymphs.
You can tie many versions of this nymph. One of my favorites is a damsel fly nymph or what I call a swimming nymph, because it is stripped slowly and attracts many different game fish. Hair from a rabbit strip works well for the tail and collar on the Damsel. I use this fly when fishing on the lakes during the warm months.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
