Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature is 41.9 degrees.
Yesterday was very warm and windy. Rain and stronger winds arrived in the evening. The high temperature yesterday reached 70.9 degrees in Townsend. Rainfall amounts were recorded at 1.7 inches in Townsend and 1.49 inches at the Knoxville Airport. Winds were clocked at up to 91 miles per hour at Cove Mountain, and 74 miles per hour at Look Rock.
It will be partly cloudy and much colder today with a high in the low 40’s and a low tonight in the middle 20’s. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer with a high around 50 degrees and a low in the middle 20’s again tomorrow night. Sunday will be sunny and warmer. The high will be around 60 degrees with a low in the low to middle 30’s.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing very high and some are still rising.
Little River is flowing at 1,500 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.94 feet on the gauge. The river is receding. Median flow for this date is 355 cfs. The water temperature is 46.2 degrees. Yesterday that number rose to about 51 degrees.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 5,490 cfs, 5.93 feet, compared to median flow of 857 cfs. The river is rising. The flow may reach a record for this date later this morning.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 3,100 cfs, 4.39 feet, which compares to median flow of 628 for this date. The current flow is a record for this date last set at 2,330 cfs set in 1990.
Tellico River is flowing at 1,489 cfs, 4.23 feet and the river is receding. Median flow for this date is 382 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 404 cfs, 3.52 feet, compared to median flow of 147 cfs.
Fishing in the Smokies will be slow today and wading will be dangerous.
Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road) is closed due to high winds.
Most lowland rivers in the area are blown out with high water.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day with only short breaks at some dams. There are some tailwater fishing options so check the TVA website from the links below and plan accordingly.
The long term weather forecast has been updated. It will be warm, day and night early next week, and wet. Cold nights will return Friday February 25th, lasting through March 4th. This forecast was much better a few days ago and it may change again.
