Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:37 am, the temperature is 21.9 degrees.
This is going to be a nice, sunny, warm day, with a high temperature in the low 60’s, dropping to the upper 30’s tonight. Tomorrow will be warmer, in the middle to upper 60’s and a low around 50 degrees. It will be sunny until later in the day.
Rain will move into the area tomorrow night and continue every day through at least Thursday night. It will be warm through Thursday, with high temperatures reaching 70 degrees and lows in the 40’s and 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 411 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.43 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 362 cfs. The water temperature is 42.1 degrees this morning.
Most weather websites are not mentioning how much rain we will get this week except one. That site predicts between 3 and 5 inches. I hope that does not happen.
Streams in the mountains are flowing at normal. The water is chilly. We will see some warming today and temperatures will climb through Thursday. Fishing may improve some today with more improvement tomorrow. Then, the rain will begin and it will be warm. Unless we get too much rain this week, fishing could be good.
If you go fishing today, nymphs rigs will probably work best for you. I would go later to give the water a chance to warm some. Fish the low elevations.
Lowland river fishing for stocked trout will improve every day this week, unless the streams become blown out. Nymphs, egg flies, squirmy worms and mop flies are good choices.
If water temperatures reach 50 degrees or warmer, fishing will be good this week, barring high water.
There are fairly long pauses in the generation schedules at some dams today. Unfortunately, Norris Dam is not one of them. Clinch River anglers could use a break. South Holston is one of them and there are a few more. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing options you have.
This has been a busy weekend in the shop so far. Better weather has drawn customers out of the house and it is a holiday weekend. Many of the customers I helped yesterday were visitors who are staying in or near Townsend.
I talked to several customers who drove to Townsend from fairly long distances to shop in the fly tying department. A father and son drove from North Carolina to buy tying materials, then drove back home. It makes me feel good when customers drive that long to patronize us. Thank you. We try very hard to make it worth the trip.
Today will be more of the same.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
