Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:34 am, the temperature is 38.5 degrees.
It will become overcast today with a high temperature in the middle 60’s and a low tonight in the low 50’s. Tonight will be breezy with showers likely. Tomorrow will be breezy again with a high in the low to middle 70’s, dropping to the middle 50’s at night. Rain will continue each day through Friday.
According to the National Weather Service, “Localized flooding is the main concern this week as multiple systems will bring a total of several inches of rain to the area”. That does not sound like good news.
I have seen some models that conclude we will get between 3” to 5+” of rain this week.
Little River is flowing at 368 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.34 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 351 cfs. The water temperature is 42.8 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains that have USGS gauges are flowing at about normal this morning. The water is cold at all elevations. Fishing for trout is slow but could improve as we move further into the week.
It is going to be warm until late this week. Warm air day and night, along with rain, will raise water temperatures until the weekend, when it will be cold again. Fishing will improve from a temperature perspective, though the heavy rain that may occur could cause high water and possible flooding.
If I were planning a fishing trip to the Smokies this weekend, the threat of heavy rain would be my primary consideration.
Lowland river fishing for trout will be slow today, but may improve somewhat later this afternoon and over the next few days, unless the streams become too high to fish.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating with only short breaks or no breaks at many dams today. I noticed pauses at a couple this afternoon. I did not check the schedules at every dam, so visit the TVA website to see if you can find favorable flows at your favorite tailwater.
We were busy at the shop yesterday, and probably will be again today, as this is a holiday. We will be at the shop waiting for you between 9 am and 5 pm. We only close four days each year.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
