Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature is 50.9 degrees.
Heavy rain fell in the Smokies and foothills of East Tennessee during the past two days. Rainfall in Townsend amounted to 3.46 inches Tuesday and Wednesday. The heavy rain caused minor flooding.
Cades Cove Loop Road was closed yesterday morning due to downed trees. It appears to still be closed.
It is raining again now and I am hearing thunder.
Rain and storms will continue this morning before ending early this afternoon. Another round of rain is predicted late tonight and tomorrow. Rainfall amounts between 1.5 inches to over 2 inches are expected, according to the National Weather Service. The ground is saturated. Flooding is possible.
Little River is flowing at 1,780 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 4.28 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 347 cfs. The water temperature is 51.1 degrees.
Though streams in the mountains receded yesterday afternoon and overnight, they are still flowing high. Wading will not be safe. Fishing will not be good.
Most lowland rivers flowing out of the Smokies are flowing high. Little River was close to flood stage yesterday morning. It has receded but it is too high to fish.
TVA is holding water back at many tributary dams today, offering us some long pauses in the generation schedules. You may be able to find a tailwater to fish today. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
Fishing on the tailwaters may be your best chance to fish this week. Some rivers may be stained below where tributaries flow in.
During the past two years, fly tying materials have been tough to get for many reasons. Will and I have been keeping the fly tying department fairly well stocked during this time by building our inventory and ordering often. We have shifted our buying between suppliers on some items to maintain our offering. We order weekly from our three largest suppliers.
The situation is definitely improving. We are seeing materials and tools arrive that have been out of stock for months. Though our fly tying inventory “out of stock” number has rarely exceeded more that 5% of the total, we are working to lower that number. I would be happier with 1%.
I create a list of the out of stock items every morning and we are very familiar with what those items are. That helps us make decisions to serve you better.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
