Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature is 35.8 degrees.
This will be a cloudy day with a high temperature in the low 50’s, dropping to the middle to upper 30’s tonight. Rain will move in by morning and continue to fall through tomorrow. The high temperature tomorrow will be in the upper 40’s with a low in the low 30’s overnight.
Little River is flowing at 1,410 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.83 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 346 cfs. The water temperature is 46.9 degrees and falling.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing high, too high to safely wade. Water temperatures are dropping. It will be fairly warm today but no sun is expected. I don’t think the streams will warm much.
If you are determined to fish in the Smokies, stand in safe water casting heavily weighted nymph rigs. Use “high sticking” or Euro nymphing techniques.
Lowland rivers are flowing high. You might catch a stocked trout or two. At least, you could try. Again, stand near the bank in safe water and fish weighted nymph rigs.
Rivers and streams are flowing high and swift. Be careful.
Tailwater anglers will find long breaks at some dams. Maybe there are flows you can work with. Check the TVA website to see what tailwater options you have today.
The long term weather forecast indicates a warming trend will begin in the middle of next week. Unless there is a change, which is possible, we will enjoy warm days and nights, with highs in the 60’s and 70’s and lows in the 40’s and 50’s through March 12th.
If this forecast holds true, the water will warm and fishing will improve in the freestone streams. Fishing may be good if the streams are flowing closer to normal.
The 6 to 10 day temperature outlook from NOAA, which is valid for March 3rd through March 7th, predicts temperatures will be above normal in the southeast. The same model suggest that rainfall will be normal in our area.
Will and I are taking a complete inventory of items in the fly tying department. Because we order materials and tools automatically, using our inventory system, mistakes must be cleaned up to maintain the inventory of items we desire.
The fly tying department is divided into 37 sections that are clearly identified. That way, we can inventory a small section that does not take very long. We use a laptop on a rolling cart with a barcode scanner. We can do it while customers are shopping. We have a log where we record when we inventoried each section. We may inventory one section per day or maybe more. When we are finished, we will start over.
I will be inventorying sections today, while Will is receiving fly tying orders that arrived during the past two days from Hareline and Firehole. We will also be helping customers in the fly tying department which is our highest priority. Everyone else will be helping you downstairs on the main floor.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
