Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:37 am, the temperature is 40.1 degrees.
It is raining this morning. Total rainfall accumulation over the past 24 hours has amounted to .65 inches in Townsend at a weather station near the shop.
Rain will continue to fall this morning before ending this afternoon. The high temperature today will be in the middle to high 40’s and fall to around 30 degrees tonight. It will be sunny and warmer tomorrow with a high in the upper 50’s and a low tomorrow night in the middle 30’s.
Little River is flowing at 1,130 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.43 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 324 cfs. The water temperature is 46.8 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing high, too high to safely wade and fish. Water temperatures are on the chilly side but holding steady in the 40’s. If you fish in the Smokies today, stand in safe water using weighted nymph rigs.
The same is true in the lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains. The streams are swift. Stand in safe water and cast weighted nymph rigs to fish for stocked trout.
Do not expect fishing to be good due to higher than normal flows and cool water temperatures. You should be happy catching a trout or two.
There are not many tailwater wade fishing opportunities today, but there are a few possibilities. If you are boating, there are more options. Check the TVA website to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
Here is some good news! Spring-like temperatures will be enjoyed by us in the Southeast US later this week. Temperatures will be above normal to our south and north.
Predicted high temperatures here will be in the 70’s Thursday through Monday. Lows at night will be in the 40’s and 50’s. The chance for rain is low after today and through Saturday.
Streams will recede slowly and water temperatures will rise. Fishing will improve. I am looking forward to this and I know many of you are too.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
