Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature is 30.4 degrees.
Today will be sunny and warm with a high temperature in the middle 60’s and a low tonight in the low 40’s. Every day through the end of the week will be sunny and warm with no chance for rain until Sunday. High temperatures will be in the 70’s beginning tomorrow. Lows at night are predicted to be in the 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 992 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.26 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 335 cfs. The water temperature is 45.1 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smoky Mountains are slowly receding. They are still flowing higher than anglers prefer. Wait a few days and you will see improvement. The rivers are chilly but they will be warming every day this week. Fishing will improve by the weekend.
It is hard to say how fast the streams will recede to a good fishing level. The ground is saturated and it will take time. We are all hoping for good fishing conditions by the weekend.
If you go today, wait a while for the water to warm some. Choose a low elevation stream. Stand in safe water and drift weighted nymph rigs.
All we need is lower flows and warmer water. That will come over time.
Lowland river fishing for stocked trout will improve this week as the rivers recede and warm. Nymphs, squirmy worms, egg flies, mop flies and streamers will work for you.
TVA will be generating at most dams that control the flow of our most popular trout tailwaters today. There are exceptions. Check the TVA website from the links below to see the few wade fishing options you have today.
The long term weather forecast looks promising, at least during the first week of March. It does indicate cooler temperatures and chilly nights during the latter part of the second week. We may see nighttime temperatures drop to the upper 30’s.
That is too far into the future to be reliable. Things can change one way or the other.
Many of you are trying to plan your Spring fishing trip to the southern states where wild trout thrive naturally. That is hard to do in March. We want to make our first Spring fishing trip the best it could possibly be.
When the streams warm to 50 degrees or warmer, and that temperature is sustained, aquatic insects and trout will be active. Fishing will be good. I would give anything to tell you that will happen by this weekend but I don’t want to go out on a limb.
When it does happen, we will all know.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
