Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:37 am, the temperature is 71.2 degrees.
Showers are likely today with possible heavy rain and wind. We are under a wind advisory today. The high temperature will be in the low to middle 70’s with a low tonight in the upper 30’s. It will be mostly cloudy and cooler tomorrow with a high around 60 degrees and a low in the middle 40’s tomorrow night. Rain returns to the forecast Tuesday night and Wednesday.
Little River is flowing at 345 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.29 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 390 cfs. The water temperature is 54.5 degrees this morning at the low elevation gauge in Townsend.
Water levels in the mountains are good. Streams have warmed to the trout’s preferred range. Fishing is good. Aquatic insects are active. I don’t know if trout have begun feeding on the surface but I suspect they have. I did not talk to any returning anglers yesterday. Those I talked to earlier told me trout were only taking nymphs the day before.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, be prepared with nymphs, dry flies and wet fly emergers. The hatches you may encounter are likely to be Blue Quills. Some could be Quill Gordons, Blue wing olives or other species.
Lowland river fishing for stocked trout is good. Smallmouth bass may be fairly active too.
TVA and the Corps of engineers will be generating for long periods at most area dams today. Additionally, they are sluicing at some and even spilling at one dam. Check the TVA website generation schedules and you may find a tailwater fishing opportunity but not much to choose from.
If you are planning a fishing trip to East Tennessee this week, pay close attention to the weather. It will become colder by the weekend. The predicted low temperature Saturday night could fall into the teens. Snow is possible Saturday. Water temperatures will fall. Fishing will likely slow if the weather forecast holds true. Watch the water levels. Streams could be flowing high again.
It is hard to plan early Spring fishing trips in advance.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
