Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 42.6 degrees.
Rainfall yesterday amounted to .36 and .97 inches at two Townsend private weather stations. Cades Cove reported .47 inches while .52 inches fell in Gatlinburg.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a high temperature around 60 degrees and a low tonight in the middle 40’s. Showers will move into the area tonight and continue through tomorrow. The high temperature tomorrow is predicted to be in the middle 50’s, falling to around 40 degrees tomorrow night.
Little River is flowing at 452 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.51 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 373 cfs. The water temperature is 52.7 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains rose yesterday but they have receded to normal or slightly higher than normal this morning. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range.
Fishing should be good again today, especially in the low to middle elevations. Aquatic insects are active though hatches are probably going to be sporadic. You will likely see Blue Quill, Quill Gordon, Blue Wing Olive and other species. Trout are taking dry flies, wet flies and nymphs.
Lowland river fishing for stocked trout is good. Nymphs will work. Also, try squirmy worms, egg patterns, mop flies and streamers.
TVA and the Corps are planning to generate today with only short breaks at some dams and none at others. There are exceptions so check the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing opportunities you have today.
If you are planning a trip to the Smokies to fish this weekend, keep an eye on the weather and water temperatures. A cold front is predicted to move in Friday night. Right now, the forecast is calling for temperatures to fall into the 20’s Friday night. Saturday will be cold with a predicted high in the 30’s and a low in the low to middle teens Saturday night. It may snow Saturday. Sunday will be warmer during the day but cold at night. A gradual warming trend is predicted next week.
Unless the forecast changes, water temperatures will fall and fishing will slow this weekend.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
