Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 48.4 degrees.
Rain moved in early last evening and continued overnight. It is still raining here early this morning. Heavy rain fell is some areas but not in others. For instance, rain totals since the rain began amounted to 1.72 and 1.30 inches in Townsend. Cades Cove reports 1.29 inches. Gatlinburg got less, .51 inches and Cherokee, NC is reporting .38 inches.
Showers and thunderstorms are likely this morning before ending this afternoon. The high temperature today will be in the upper 40’s falling to the high 30’s tonight. It will be sunny and warmer tomorrow, with a high in the low to middle 60’s and a low in the low 40’s tomorrow night.
Friday should be sunny and warm with a high in the upper 60’s. A cold front will move in Friday night bringing showers then possibly snow with a low in the upper 20’s. Saturday will be cold with a chance for a winter mix and snow. The low temperature predicted Saturday night will be in the low teens.
Little River is flowing at 637 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.82 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 356 cfs. Little River is rising quickly. The water temperature is 50.0 degrees this morning.
Streams on the west side of the mountains are rising quickly. Most will be too high to fish and safely wade today. Some streams on the east side are rising but not much so far. That may change later or maybe not.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, check the stream flows before going.
Lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains in this area are flowing high and rising. That may not be the case in other areas.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers are planning to generate or sluice at most dams in the area. You may find an exception or two so check the TVA website to see if you have any tailwater fishing options today.
We got our first taste of Spring fishing, which will likely be paused this weekend. Flowers and trees are blooming. Yesterday, a wild turkey gobbler was fanned and strutting among a group of hens at our house. Streams were flowing at good levels and warm. Bugs are hatching. Fishing has been good for several days.
Spring will resume next week. A warming trend is predicted.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
