Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 38.3 degrees.
It will be sunny and warm today with a high temperature in the upper 60’s. A strong cold front will move into the area tonight. Rain is predicted. Temperatures will fall into the 20’s. Rain will turn to snow. It will be cold tomorrow with a high in the upper 20’s, falling to the low teens Saturday night. Sunday will be warmer with a high in the low 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 753 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.98 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 355 cfs. The water temperature is 48.6 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal but they are receding. Some streams are flowing higher than most anglers prefer. You could go fishing today but you will need to pick your spots. Stay in safe water when fishing or moving. I think heavily weighted nymphs will work best. Dry flies and wet flies could work too.
Water temperatures will fall overnight and fishing will slow tomorrow.
Lowland rivers exiting the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Fly fishing for stocked trout may be fair to good today. Try nymphs, squirmy worms, egg patterns, mop flies and streamers.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating with no pauses at every dam I checked this morning. There may be some tailwater fishing options out there so check the generation schedules to see what is happening on your favorite river.
After we get through this weekend, warmer weather is coming our way. We will enjoy highs in the 60’s to low 70’s with lows in the 40’s most of next week. The streams will re-warm and fishing will improve.
Paula showed me photos she took yesterday of a group of wild turkeys loafing around our bird feeders, waiting for a seed to drop. The group was made up of several hens and one gobbler. The gobbler was fanned out and strutting. Turkeys will be mating soon.
The gobbler we are seeing around our house has found a fairly large group of about 15 hens. He is hoping to mate with these hens. We see that every Spring. A larger gobbler may appear and force this one to leave after a fight or multiple fights. That is not unusual.
Turkey hunting season will open in early April.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
