Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:30 am, the temperature is 13.1 degrees.
We got some snow early yesterday morning. It looked like about 3 inches fell in Townsend. The roads were warm, so travel was not a problem. We were busy at the shop yesterday. A lot of people were out and about, looking at the white mountains. I saw some kids sledding across the road from the shop. Some roads in the Park closed night before last. Little River Road and Laurel Creek Road opened later yesterday morning. It appears Newfound Gap Road is still closed.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature around 50 degrees and a low tonight in the upper 20’s. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer. Expect a high in the low 60’s and a low in the upper 30’s tomorrow night.
Little River is flowing at 631 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.81 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 349 cfs. The water temperature is 38.1 degrees and dropping fast.
Streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Water temperatures are very cold. Fishing will be slow in the Smokies today.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains will be slow.
Fishing will improve later this week when the streams warm.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating at every dam I checked this morning, all day long. Power demand is high. You might find an angler friendly generation schedule that I missed.
Well, the good news is, we will trend back to normal warmer temperatures, day and night beginning Tuesday. We should enjoy highs in the 60’s and 70s through March 27th, according to the long term weather forecast. Lows at night will be in the 40’s, and maybe in the low 50’s through the period. Fishing will improve due to the warmer water.
We will be open today, of course. Come on by!
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
