Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:35 am, the temperature is 36.7 degrees.
We are transitioning back to Spring-like weather. It is warm again in the Tennessee River Valley. Today will be partly sunny with a high temperature in the upper 60’s with a low tonight in the middle to upper 40’s. Rain will move in tomorrow. Expect a high in the middle 60’s and a low in the 40’s. Thursday will be warmer, near 70 degrees. Rain returns Friday with a high temperature around 70 degrees.
Little River is flowing at 598 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.76 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 319 cfs. The water temperature is 45.5 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are receding slowly. The ground is saturated, leaching plenty of water into the streams constantly. Most streams are flowing higher than normal today. You may find the water to be higher and swifter than you prefer. Most anglers would like to see lower water levels.
The water is warming and will continue to warm all week. The closer we get to sustained temperatures of 50 degrees or warmer, day and night, the better the fishing will be. I don’t know when that will happen but we are moving in the right direction now.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, start with weighted nymph rigs in the lower elevation streams. Trout will be more likely to take dry flies when the water warms to 50 degrees or warmer.
Lowland river fishing for stocked trout will improve every day. The rivers are receding and the water is warming. Sub-surface flies will work best.
Many tailwaters will be flowing high today. TVA and the Corps plan to generate around the clock at the dams I just checked this morning. You may find a tailwater fishing opportunity, so click on every schedule to see what you can come up with.
Lake levels are higher than TVA and the Corps would like to see this time of the year. This has been a wet year so far. They are trying to draw the lakes down to create storage capacity. Their goal is to control flooding during major rain events in the future which are likely to occur in the Spring.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
