Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 46.0 degrees.
We will get some rain today and it will be pleasant, with a high temperature in the low 60’s and a low tonight in the upper 40’s. Tomorrow will be partly sunny with a high in the upper 60’s and a low in the upper 40’s tomorrow night. Friday will be mostly cloudy with a high near 70 degrees and a chance for rain showers. Showers are likely Friday night and early Saturday morning. The sky will clear Saturday and the high temperature will be in the low 60’s. Sunday will be sunny and warm.
Little River is flowing at 567 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.71 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 367 cfs. The water temperature is 48.2 degrees.
Streams in the mountains are slowly receding. Most are flowing slightly higher than normal.
Water temperatures are rising. Fishing is improving and should continue to improve by the weekend, unless rain raises the water levels too much. Heavy rain does not appear to be likely this week. None of the weather websites I looked at this morning committed to how much rain is predicted. That usually means we won’t get much but you never know for sure.
Water levels are higher than some anglers prefer, but the streams are fishable. I would use heavily weighted nymph rigs today. If you see trout surface feeding activity, switch to dry flies and wet flies. You will probably see aquatic insect adults on the water at times. I think trout may be feeding on them as the water temperature approaches 50 degrees or warmer.
Fish in the lower elevation streams where the water is warmer. Fishing will probably be best later today when the water is warmer.
Lowland river fishing for stocked trout is improving. The rivers have been stocked and they continue to be stocked with trout.
TVA and the Corps are still lowering the reservoir levels to their desired elevation to create more storage capacity for rain events yet to come. They will be generating all day at most dams today according to the TVA schedules.
The expected rain just now started falling here at our home.
Daylight savings time may be full time if passed by Congress and signed by the President. No more springing forward or falling back if it becomes the law of the land. I write this report from home early, shower and drive to the shop early.
Since the time change occurred, it is dark when I drive to work. I am accustomed to commuting when it is dark in the Winter months. Then, for a while, it is daylight. Now, it is dark again.
I drive slow to work under these conditions. I never know when a bear, deer or coyote will run across the road in front of me. I have come close to hitting a bear or deer several times during the past 30 years. There is one area on Old Tuckaleechee Road, that seems to be a wildlife corridor. Soon, it will be light outside during my morning commute. I’m looking forward to that.
